Cliff Walk Repairs Begin

Nearly one year after Hurricane Sandy battered the coast, washing away entire sections of Newport's Cliff Walk, construction crews have arrived on the scene to begin preliminary engineering work to re-open the popular path.

According to Department of Utilities Director Bill Riccio, crews from the John Roccio Corp. are working quickly to begin a full scale restoration of the Cliff Walk prior to the onset of the winter season.

According to Riccio, the first portion of the work is expected to be completed by Dec. 1, when the area around Ledge Road is restored.

Roccio Corp. won the state contract for the repairs after a competitive bidding process that wrapped up several weeks ago.

State transportation officials gave the firm formal approval to begin construction just last week. By Tuesday, construction fencing had already gone up and equipment was moved in.

The $3.2 million project is scheduled to run, weather permitting, through the winter, with a completion date set for next spring.
