Portsmouth Military Families

Portsmouth school district’s first military family meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Portsmouth Free Public Library, 2568 East Main Rd. Children are welcome at the meeting. The group will focus on some of the goals that they came up with last year, including how to improve the registration process for military families and how to help with the transition of military students. Janet McCarthy, School Liaison Officer, and Kristen Swenson, Exceptional Family Member Program Liaison and parent of three Portsmouth military students, will be on hand to answer questions. Military Parents at Pell

The Pell Elementary School is looking to form a military parents group to draw on the combined expertise of the military families to make Pell a better place for all students and as military-friendly as possible. Flu Vaccine

Flu vaccine is now available at Naval Health Clinic New England, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis at the immunizations clinic. FluMist nasal spray (for those ages 2-49) and vaccine injections are available.

Reserve Gala Reception

Rear Adm. Walter E. Carter Jr., president of the Naval War College, will be the special guest of the R.I. Department of Reserve Officers Association at their welcome gala reception on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Atlantic Beach Club. Haunted Trail

The Haunted Trail returns to the Carr Point Recreation Area on Defense Highway, Oct. 12 and 19, from 6- 9 p.m. The event features a spooky trail through the woods, entertainment, concession tents, and arts and crafts tables. For more information, call MWR at 401-841- 3127. The event is open to active duty personnel, retirees, reservists, eligible family members, DoD employees and contractors with base access.

Army Halloween Event

The 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion Family Readiness Group will host “Trunk or Treating” on Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Sgt. Michael F. Paranzino, U.S. Army Reserve Center, 1390 Simonpietri Drive, at Naval Station Newport. Participants should decorate the trunks of their vehicles in the spirit of Halloween and provide candy for the children. Prizes will be awarded to the best decorated vehicles. Arrive 5 - 5:30 p.m. “Trunk or Treating” will start at 6 p.m.

MilspouseNewport Events

The Military Spouses of Newport will host two upcoming social events. The club will host a family fun event at Escobar’s Corn Maze in Portsmouth on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2-4 p.m. Adults (12+) $7, kids 5-11 $5, and under 5 are free. Bring a small treat to share. Register at milspousenewport.org.

Volunteers Wanted

American Legion Post 18 is seeking volunteers to help bring a bit of Halloween fun to residents of the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol on Saturday, Oct. 26 at a Halloween-themed bingo party. Volunteers will socialize with the residents and help play games and are encouraged to wear black and orange. NAPS Parents Weekend

Naval Academy Prep School’s Parents Weekend will be held Oct. 12-14. There will be a pass and review on Nimitz Field, Oct. 11 at 11:30 a.m. to kick off the festivities. Events will be held on the base throughout the weekend, including the homecoming football game against Bridgton Academy of Maine on Saturday at 2 p.m. All with base access are welcome.
