Bridge Funding Solutions Continue

To the Editor:

It was a pleasure to watch Representative John G. Edwards (DDist. 70, Portsmouth, Tiverton), Senator Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton), and Senator Christopher S. Ottiano (R-Dist. 11, Portsmouth, Bristol) in action with other legislative members and staff on Thursday, Sept. 26, during the Special Legislative Commission to study the funding for East Bay bridges.

The purpose of the study commission is to identify the overall problems of Rhode Island’s infrastructure and recommend solutions to the General Assembly. The agenda included a review of legislation and a presentation by the House and Senate fiscal staffs, and also provided a recap of recent studies on Rhode Island’s infrastructure and funding, current initiatives, and economic impact considerations.

As always, our legislators were individually impressive, but they also sent a very powerful collective message as they advocated for Newport County’s best interests .

We owe a large debt of gratitude to our representatives and should support and encourage them in every way possible. It is clear that they are going to play a part in providing answers to a long-term systemic problem that has been solved in the past with Band-Aid solutions.

While I do not wish to take away from the fine job that our other local representatives are doing on our behalf, I would like to especially thank these three legislators for their efforts in protecting Newport County.

The next scheduled meeting will be during the week of Oct. 18. I encourage our residents to attend the session or to watch the broadcast on Capitol TV.
