Navy Yard Fund Established

The Navy League of the United States has established the Washington Navy Yard Survivors Fund to provide financial assistance to those families most affected by the tragic events at the Navy Yard on Sept. 16. One hundred percent of the donations will go to help those injured in the attack and their families. To find out how you can help, visit navyleague.org.

Flu Vaccine

Flu vaccine is now available at Naval Health Clinic New England, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis at the immunizations clinic. FluMist nasal spray (for those ages 2-49) and vaccine injections are available. Fluzone HD, for those 65 and older or with compromised immune systems, will be available shortly.

Submarine Veterans Honored

A memorial service to honor the 3,632 men lost while serving in the U.S. Submarine Force during World War II will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Exeter on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. Fifty-two submarines went down during the war and 21 Rhode Islanders were lost.

Spouses Coffee

The Military Spouses of Newport club gathers informally on Fridays for coffee at Sweet Berry Farm, 915 Mitchell's Lane in Middletown from 9-11 a.m. Bring the little ones and stop by for casual conversation.

Local WWII and Korean War Veterans Sought

American Legion Post 18 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5390 and their auxiliaries hope to identify all living Aquidneck Island residents who served in WWII and/or the Korean War. The posts will honor the “Greatest Generation” at a ceremony to be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Portsmouth Town Hall. SNA 5K By The Bay to Run

As of press time, the Newport Chapter of the Surface Navy Association’s 90th running of the SNA 5K By The Bay is still scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 5. The fall favorite begins at 9 a.m. in front of the Surface Warfare Officers School (bldg. 446). Check the group’s website at sna5k.org to verify status as race day nears.

Navy Ball

The Newport Navy Ball will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Officers' Club. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. and include dinner and dancing to the sounds of the Northeast Navy Band. The theme of the event is “The Year of Military Women,” and retired Rear Adm. Barbara McGann, interim superintendent of Portsmouth public schools, is the guest speaker.

MWR Golf

The annual Morale, Welfare and Recreation golf tournament will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Newport National Golf Club, 324 Mitchell’s Lane. Check-in is at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The fees are $65 for military personnel, dependents, reservists and DoD personnel and $90 for guests. Call 401-841-3154 for more information.
