Clarifying Chicken Keeping

When City Councilors approved an ordinance revision last month to allow residential chicken keeping, we reported that they opened the door to the practice "by right." However, as Melissa Stolhammer, the city's new planner pointed out, a use “by right” would imply that chicken owners simply have to abide by the conditions within the municipal code. This, to the possible dismay of urban farmers, is not the case. Those interested in raising and keeping chickens will still need to appear before the Zoning Board of Review before they can install their coop and bring their chickens home to roost. We regret the error. For more information on the finer points of raising chickens in Newport, visit City Hall, or call Zoning Officer Guy Weston at 845- 5452.
