School is in Session

The Newport community and state officials came out in droves to celebrate the official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Pell Elementary School on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Since the 1750s, Newport has been home to roughly 25 schools and the city, according to Commissioner of Education Deborah Gist, was one of the first in the U.S. to invest in public education. During the dedication ceremony, Governor Lincoln Chafee said, “I know there are memories of Sullivan, Coggeshall, Underwood and Cranston-Calvert, but there will be great new memories created here at Pell.” The governor cut the ribbon with Nuala Pell, wife of the late Senator Claiborne Pell, for whom the school is named.
